Finally, Gerald can be discharged today!!
His temperature is normal, his blood test shows all readings within the normal range too, including his liver readings (yesterday he was slightly jaundiced). His blood glucose has normalised to 5.39 (what a relief!).
So, the vet says he is fit to go home!!
But we would have to continue with the wound cleaning twice a day. Gerald’s check-up is in 4 days’ time.
Meanwhile, Gerald has to finish 3 more days of Baytril (antibiotics), and a full course of Clindamycin (antibiotics), plus Gabapentin (painkiller) twice daily and Vetri DMG 0.5ml.
The wound cleaning will involve flushing the wound with normal saline (NaCl), then flushing with diluted iodine (1 part to 19 parts water) and while flushing, I have to press out the fluids and see if there is still pus. There was still pus this morning. Finally, once all that is done, apply Fustadin antibiotic cream. The wound cleaning is for the hole in the right shoulder and the other wound in the left hind paw between the digits. The head wound only needs cleaning with saline and application of Fustadin.
We drove home, with Gerald yowling all the way.
Home sweet home!!
After being boarded in a cage for almost six days, I know he needs to stretch his legs a bit, so I let him, under supervision.
He needs to stretch and scratch too.
I know how scary this looks. This is the shoulder wound. On the first few days after rescue, there was nothing here except for one tiny little scab. But the entire surrounding area was hardening, until it finally burst and felt fluidy, that’s when it could be lanced out. Everything takes time to happen, even injuries.
The head wound seems minor. Doesn’t require flushing.
This paw wound is pretty bad too. It was initially undetected. This one also needs flushing.
Gerald will have to be confined in this cage for now. But I will let him out to stretch his legs a few times a day.
Finally, he eats his favourite raw chicken gizzards!! I knew he’d eat once he gets home.
Yummy gizzards!!
I had to quickly go out to get some supplies and by the time I came home, Gerald had toppled everything in the cage and I cleaned it up again. I don’t think I will be using cat litter for him as he would surely mess everything up. Just paper towels for now since they also only use newspapers at the clinic. He should know it’s for his litter.
The clinic had to use the plastic e-collar because with the cushion e-collar, he was able to lick his back paw. But I’ve take off the plastic e-collar now, and I’m using the cushion e-collar to see if he still licks his back paw. Meanwhile, I’ll search online for a bigger cushion e-collar. I went to the pet stores and MrDIY but they don’t sell it.
Gerald’s journey to recovery begins now….
