Gerald’s check-up

It’s been four days since Gerald was disharged. Today was his check-up.

As usual, Gerald was yowling at the vet’s while we waited and he ended up with a temperature of 40.2 degrees. The vet said we’d let him cool down first and retake his temperature.

The wounds are healing. But the shoulder wound is actually so deep that the vet was able to stuff the entire length of a cotton bud into the wound! That’s how deep it goes. I was shocked. It is really a very deep pocket. Both wounds only have inflammatory cells and no bacteria, so that’s good. The vet advised me to wear gloves when cleaning the wounds so I would do that from now on.

Gerald’s PCV is 35% and his blood was spun to check for jaundice – there is no jaundice anymore.

A Chem 10 blood test was also done and everything is normal except for the elevated globulin, which is normal when there is infection and also for an FIV+ cat. Gerald’s glucose is also normal, so that’s a relief.

The vet listened to Gerald’s lungs and heart twice just to be sure and there was nothing unusual going on there.

An ultrasound of the lungs, bladder and kidneys also showed nothing unusual except for some mild structural change in his left kidney. The vet estimates Gerald to be 5 years old plus.

Gerald would need a dental scaling later, after his wounds have all fully recovered.

Gerald defecated while on the table, so the vet also checked his faeces. Nothing unusual there as well.

Finally, his temperature went down to 39.9 degrees, which is still slightly feverish. But since the vet had checked everything and found nothing that could have caused the fever, she said it is probably due to the inflammation in the wounds. Nothing to worry about there.

The only addition to the medication is Beazyme, for inflammation.

The next check-up will be next week.

One day at a time now….slowly and steadily.
