Ginger’s check-up at the vet’s

We took Ginger and Tabs for their check-up today.

Let’s talk about Ginger first.

Ginger’s lungs sound better now, so his inhaler can be reduced to twice a week and slowly tapered off.

Blood was taken for his CKD check-up and his SDMA is an amazing 6 (I was shocked!). Two months ago, it was 13. Today it is 6. His creatinine is 108 and urea 8.7, both of which are normal.

Ginger was diagnosed with early-stage CKD (SDMA 15) in March 2019, so it’s been more than five years now. But his creatinine and urea have been normal throughout. He underwent stemcell treatment on 5th January 2024 this year.

So, based on the readings, Ginger is at Stage 1 CKD. On our own, he is also on Kidney Support Gold as a kidney supplement. Ginger has more or less been at Stage 1 for five years now. His readings crept up around December 2023, but I put him on Kidney Support Gold and he underwent stemcell treatment. Perhaps these helped?

But Ginger is arthritic and needs to lose weight (the same old story again!). Today, he tipped the scales at 6.3kg. Well, previously, he had hit 6.5kg before too…

He was dewormed today. The vet said being FIV+, Ginger should not be on raw food.

But Ginger has been on raw food all this while. I have noticed that some CKD cats do better when on raw food because of the quality protein (at least it’s real food). Perhaps it’s suitable for Ginger.

So, it’s all good news for Ginger today!

Back home.

Ginger did not eat much for dinner. “I’ve got to lose weight, the vet says. So I’m being good now.” He even isolated himself from the Monsters who idolise him! “So that I can eat less…”

The Monsters’ healthy appetite.
