Taking care of ourselves for the sake of our animals (the liver – my appointment today)

My big moment of truth was this morning when I went to see the top internationally-renowned specialist and researcher in fatty liver.

I made the appointment two months ago. Prior to the appointment, I had written out my entire medical history for the professor and compiled all my blood test readings.

The good doctor took time to read through the medical history I had meticulously written out and asked relevant questions, the most important being, “Do you exercise? What exercise do you do?” I told him I walk daily, do gym once a week and ballet twice a week. He said that was very good.

I had already written in my medical history about my diet being low-carb and he said that was very good too.

After looking at all my readings, he said, “You are one of the healthiest patients I have ever seen. I don’t think you are in any danger of any liver disease. Just maintain your diet and exercise, you will be fine.”

And that’s from the fatty liver expert in the country and the region, so I’m all in the clear.

He even looked at my list of liver supplements and said I actually did not need any of them at all. Just the diet and exercise would be sufficient. But I asked him about the fish oil and he said that is good to be maintained. He said my weight loss was good and I should aim at not gaining anymore weight after this. Hooray! I don’t intend to gain any weight, took a lot of discipline and willpower to lose all this weight in the last eight months and I feel so much better because of it. So to the ladies who say I look “too thin” and that “women will wrinkle very fast if they don’t have some fat”, I honestly don’t care about wrinkles and all that. I just want to be healthy.

And the best news of all is that he said I do not need statins!!!!  This is because my HDL reading is good enough (thanks to the gym and ballet, not just the walking).

So to all those GPs in the past who have told me to take statins or I’ll be shortening my life, I wish you wouldn’t say such things and frighten your patients. Please read up on cholesterol, especially the latest research findings. There was even one GP who told me, very smugly, that I should just take statins and all kinds of medications (drugs) so that I could “eat anything you want” and there is no need to control my diet. Why oh why is a qualified doctor giving his patients such irresponsible advice?

I have never taken statins before and hope I will never need to.

So for now, my eight months of determination has paid off. Now, it is all about maintaining this lifestyle and diet which I’ve chosen myself and moving forward with it. I don’t crave for carbs anymore even when I’m stressed. I just eat nuts.

And I have all my cats to see through. I need to stay as healthy as I can be.

Many thanks, as always, to my brilliant pharmacist for his advice and recommendations!
