Cow is licking rocks (to the vet’s)

I noticed it two days ago. Cow was licking rocks/pebbles. I know this to be a possible sign of anaemia so I gave him Nutriplus Gel. But Cow had no signs of anaemia at all. His gums didn’t look pale. His appetite is normal. And the rocks that he was licking were some of the new rocks we added to Bunny’s Garden.

Then, I noticed it again today – Cow was licking the same rocks again at the same spot. So it’s off to the vet’s. Bunny too – for a constipation check (next blogpost).

A full blood profile was done on Cow. It turned out that Cow’s blood profile is completely normal. He is not anaemic. His blood PCV is also 35%, which is good. However, the ear-prick blood test showed that he has some pale red blood cells which indicates mild iron deficiency, so he is given Maltofer Syrup, an iron supplement (it’s a human product) for 2 weeks.

The vet also checked Cow’s kidney readings – all good. Cow weighed 4.92kg.

Cow was dewormed too (another deworming in two weeks).

Cow also has yeast infection in his ears, so he was prescribed Pyo Clean, twice a week. Cow’s heart is okay too, he has an “old heart”. Well, he IS an old cat.

The vet said not to remove those rocks and we shall see if Cow continues to lick them.

Normally when animals lick rocks, it means they lack certain minerals in their bodies.

I’m so glad it isn’t anaemia.

Next: Bunny’s enema.
