Cow Mau to the vet’s for 3 issues

I took Cow Mau to the vet’s this morning.

He had three issues.

Two days ago, his left eye got inflamed and I had started him on Gentamycin but it didn’t work. Yesterday evening, he could not even open that eye at all, so I rushed to the pharmacy before it closed to get Neo-Deca eyedrop. That helped a bit. But I still wanted it properly checked.

Then, the pawing at his mouth has increased though not to an alarming rate. He is still eating very well, but it would end with some pawing.

And this morning, I saw Cow Mau defecating (there was poop which I scooped) but after that, he strained four times at different places in a pooping position and nothing came out. I gave him Lactulose but I also wanted that checked as well.

So, off we went this morning.

First, the eye. His conjunctiva is swollen, but there is no bacterial infection yet. So the vet said to continue with the Neo-Deca eyedrop for 7 days (twice daily) which contains steroids and antibiotic to address any possible secondary infection. I asked how his conjunctiva got swollen and the vet said it is probably due to a foreign object in his eye, which caused him to scratch it and because of his FIV+ condition, it became full-blown.

Second, the pawing of the mouth. The last Vetacortyl injection was given exactly one month ago, so the vet said Cow Mau can have another low-dose injection today. This injection would last 2 weeks, but I was advised to try and postpone it as long as possible as steroids can lead to all other kinds of problems like diabetes, for example. I could also consider giving transdermal Tramadol to control the mouth pain. The vet checked and there was only one spot that was ulcerated. The rest of the gums were quite alright.

Third, the straining to poop. The vet palpated Cow Mau. There is no poop, no gassiness and his bladder is also empty. So, there are no issues there. The vet suspects that it could be that Cow Mau did not manage to squat long enough to empty his bowels so that led him to strain again and again. The vet says to give him Maximus Pro GI for 5-7 days, one sachet per day.

So, they are not serious issues, luckily. Cow Mau’s weight increased by 300g since last month. That could be due to the steroids which increased his appetite. Indeed, his appetite has been very good.

We are back home now.
