Akira and the “string theory”

The String Theory is a concept in physics.

Akira’s “string theory” is a totally different thing and has nothing to do with any one-dimensional object in space!

Yesterday, I saw a very long piece of faeces which was very scary-looking as it resembled a reptile without legs. It had a “head” which clearly, was a plop of faeces but it also had a very long tail. Without analysing much, I picked it up and threw it away.

Today, I saw Akira running around and rubbing her buttocks on the ground. Then I saw it, a very “long thing” dangling from her anus and she was running around aimlessly but definitely trying to get the long thing out. I helped her pull it out and it was that “long thing” again.

Here’s a photo, but don’t be scared, okay?

Then it dawned on me what it is – a piece of string!!

They kittens had been playing with TWO pieces of white strings (made of tshirt material) sometime last week and yes, now I remember that I haven’t seen the two pieces of strings for a few days!!

This is definitely the string and yesterday’s must have been the other piece of string too. Two pieces of strings and two pieces passed out now.

When they were playing with strings, it did occur to me and I remember clearly that cats sometimes swallow strings but I didn’t know silly little Akira could swallow a string this thick. It’s tshirt material (old tshirt, cut into strips, used as tying material). And I remember too that when Tabs was very sick many years ago and almost lost her life, the vet then asked me if Tabs might have swallowed any string. Also, another senior vet told me his vet-friend’s cat DIED (yes, died) because the cat had swallowed a string and could not pass it out. So, swallowing strings is a very dangerous thing and cannot be taken lightly.

The case with Tabs wasn’t about swallowing strings; it was a multiple bacteria infection. She recovered after being hospitalised on drips for 4 days with two different antibiotics (I camped at the vet’s to force feed her). We saw three vets for this too. Two wanted to operate thinking there was something stuck in her intestines. Luckily it wasn’t done.

Akira’s appetite has not been particularly good for the past few days but then again, she’s a very picky cat when it comes to eating so I didn’t thing much about it. But apart from her appetite, she’s been active and alert as usual. No signs of being unwell.

You silly little kitty, Akira. Why did you eat strings? Not one piece but two at that!

I’m not taking any chances, so I’ve made an appointment to take her to the vet’s today. Maybe an ultrasound is needed to check if there is anymore string left in her intestines, but it’s a good thing that she managed to pass it out. What a crazy kitten!

So, more news later this afternoon, after the check-up. I’ll be taking C0w Mau along too.
