CNRM works!

We have always advocated One-Street CNRM and keeping our colonies small and manageable. Why so? Because it works, and it’s sustainable when it’s small. But there is one caveat, though, we only recommend Care-Neuter-Return-Manage if the environment is safe for the neutered animals to live in. If there are dangers, then always prioritise R=Rehome.

Back in our old neighbourhood, we only had 6 cats on our street and they were all neutered. Cow and Bunny were our CNRM warriors, They had a sentry post in each alley and would fight off other cats who tried to enter. For the 6 years that they lived there with us, no other cat entered our street.

Then, after we moved, we brought all our cats with us but we kept them indoors. In our new neighbourhood, we got the street cats neutered. This would be Daffodil & family, Vincent, Zurik, Heidi, all of whom also guarded our street and no new cats migrated in. Of course there would be the occasional visitor, but by and large, the size of the colony would always stabilise at around 7 animals. Neutering stops the breeding. Hence, you will not encounter a population explosion.

So, in my own experience in managing One-Street CNRM on a small scale, it definitely works.

Yesterday, I was chatting with JoTong. Initally using her own funds and soon after with our Neutering Aid, she has got more than 200 dogs neutered in the past few years. These dogs come from about 17 streets. In her own words, she said:

AnimalCare has helped us so, so much a few years ago when the population to neuter was a lot. Now it’s actually already in a steady and stable situation as the majority of the females have already been spayed. I’m now focusing on those abandonment cases and also those factories that still have un-neutered females.
JoTong says that with neutering, the dog population in all her colonies have stabilised. So even though her total number is huge, it boils back down to about 10-15 dogs per street, so for each street, it’s still the same concept of One-Street CNRM at play.
