Believe it or not, I just learnt about Greek yoghurt over Pet Fiesta. Apparently, it’s a much hyped about food these days.
Here’s some information about it: http://health.usnews.com/health-news/diet-fitness/diet/articles/2011/09/30/greek-yogurt-vs-regular-yogurt-which-is-more-healthful
So, I bought Greek yoghurt for the cats (and myself) today. For the cats, I read that yoghurt helps transition them to raw food because it provides healthy bacteria to the gut.

Indy was already very excited the moment I brought the jar in.

Everyone ate except Cow and…Cleo!
Yes, Cleo did not like it. But she did lick a bit of it.

Cow, try some?
No, he refused.

Indy wasn’t crazy about it either, but he didn’t mind eating up Cow’s portion.

Of course the PatioCats ate it all up.
Vincent is a guzzler these days, ever since he recovered. I’m so glad!

I ate up the rest of it!

Cleo: Shouldn’t you know better than to give me Greek Yoghurt from a jar? I’m a BARF-eater. Why would I need yoghurt??
Please consult your vet before giving any new types of food to your animals.
I’d like to also share this story with you: I was talking to Coco&Joe’s Mr Ang and he shared that when they were experimenting raw foods for their own cats, they found that their cats refused to eat certain “nice looking” fish. Then they discovered why – those “nice looking” fish had been soaked in formalin! Yes, yikes!! But when they switched to sardines (and especially the not-so-nice looking ones), the cats ate!
So, here’s an eye-opener for me. I will trust that the cats know better. And if they don’t want to eat something, I will not force them.
On hindsight, the same actually happened with our cats too. Remember during CNY, I gave them a treat of ikan kembung and they all liked it? Later on, I bought bawal putih (thinking that it would be a better treat) and none of them liked it. In fact, they all refused to eat it.
I guess we know why now….
And it’s rather sad that we humans don’t know how to tell the difference. We’ve lost our survival instincts. Or did we even have it, to begin with?

Oh yes, my cats definitely know… they prefer cooked chicken/pork rather than the canned food!
Aren’t cats so smart?!!
Jack gets boiled rice and carrots with steam salmon or chicken too. One pot meal for both dogs and humans!
My cats never did like my cooked food….sigh. But am glad some of them like the BARF now. I don’t foresee myself preparing BARF because I don’t think I have the stomach to process raw food, and I worry I might get it wrong too! One of the dangers, I read, is home-prepared food which is not nutritionally complete.
Note about Greek yoghurt. In the market there are real Greek yoghurt and yoghurt made to taste like Greek yoghurt. Greek yoghurt is more expensive to produce and create more waste, and sells at a higher price. So it has become common practice to sell yoghurt with thickening agent to make the texture resemble “Greek” yoghurt.
Also for busy people like you, if you want to buy fish in bulk for the kitties – you can check out Ombak Market: http://www.ombakmarket.com/category-174888.html. Disclaimer: I don’t buy fish because I find them really “Eww”, so I have not tried this online service. 😀
Hi Chen, Thanks for the information about Greek yoghurt. I’m just using yoghurt to “prepare” the cats’ stomachs for BARF. I heard about Greek yoghurt and thought I would try it. If that is the case (that these may be “fraudulent” Greek yoghurt with thickening agent), would it be better to just buy the natural, “normal” yoghurt then?
I don’t think I want to buy fish too….ha ha. That CNY treat was a one-time thingie. But thanks for sharing the link!
I LOVE greek yoghurt-ngiao. But Little Nut doesn’t. She’ll turn her pretty little nose up and run away every time Mama tries to give her some. All the better, more for me-ngiao. But Mama doesn’t buy that brand of Greek yoghurt Dr Chan-ngiao. She’s not convinced that it’s good enough as it is not thick and creamy. Mama likes the brand Farmers Union which she tried when she was in Australia-ngiao. Now that is really thick and creamy and yummy!

Hi Oreo! Thanks for the information and link. The supermarket I went to only had Nestle’s and Sunglo’s. No other brands. 🙁 I shall look for it in another supermarket then. Thank you very much for sharing! Wow, you are a yoghurt-eating cat! None of our cats were crazy about it. Maybe ‘coz it’s not the REAL Greek yoghurt…
I have tried Farmers Union Greek yogurt too, Oreo. But my favourite is still … Moo Cow plain yoghurt ice cream served topless in a cone!
Hi Auntie Chen, Mama says I cannot have ice cream-ngiao so I cannot try your Moo Cow (cow? as in Dr Chan’s cow?) plain yoghurt ice cream-ngiao… 🙁
Ha ha ha…. Cow is beginning to lick a bit of the Yoghurt now. I think Cow knows that yoghurt is from milk, so why should he need milk since he is Cow, right?
Tell your mama that the weather is very hot and that ice cream is good when it is hot. She can buy a whole tub and let you and Hazel lick some when the day gets unbearably hot. :-p
Moo Cow is not Cow Mau the cat!
Moo Cow is not Dr Chan’s Cow-ngiao? But Dr Chan, aren’t milk meant for cows-ngiao?
Mama says no ice cream-ngiao. 🙁
But Mama lets us play with ice cubes when the day gets unbearably hot-ngiao. Little Nut especially loves to dribble the ice all over the house… and I just love chasing it up and down when Mama slides the ice across the house. It cools our paws down-ngiao and we get our exercise too. Our vet visit is coming up soon and we need to shape up, otherwise DR will call me a Fatty-ngiao!
