I know we are too far away to help, but it is very sad to know that this “disease” happens everywhere in the world…

I think it all boils down to a lack of respect for pets, and a total lack of responsibility on the part of the owners.
On the homefront, I see emails circulating about a latest case of cruelty in the Kepong KTM station where someone had shoved a piece of wood down the throat of a stray dog which was tied to a pole.
The things some humans do to beings who are weaker than them. It is sad.
The key to solving these problems is precisely what I work very hard to promote in my public talks and my books – unconditional loving-kindness, ie. treating and loving each living being as much as we would our own child, doing for them what we would for our child.
This is the key to solving these animal-related problems – education and leading by example. Humans need to realise that animals too need as much as love and care as they do.
The superiority of humans (if ever it exists, that is) is not measured by how much cruelty and violence they can inflict on weaker beings. It is measured by how much love, care and help they can provide for those who are weaker than them.

After clicking on the "Dogs in Danger" link and reading the story, I would just like to say that not all people who are surrendering dogs to shelters in the US are irresponsible. The financial crisis there has hit many families so hard that they have lost their homes and are having to choose between feeding their pets and feeding their children. Yes, it would be lovely if those who are faring better would step up and help the abandoned pets, (and many are!), but I feel the need to speak out in defense of the families who are forced to surrender their beloved dogs because they are now simply destitute. I don't think many Malaysians understand how many Americans are now living in parks, in cars, in homeless shelters, etc.
Promoting unconditional loving-kindness among human is not even that possible – I mean, look at the politics, wars, and domestic violence happening in the country and around the world now, left alone promoting these values for other beings.
Living harmoniously with the nature seems to be so far away in the society now.
the problem is that these sadistic people who torture animals also are the type who will beat up their own children and family members…. and they certainly do not attend any public talks about compassion to animals… so how to reach out to them? they live in a perverted world of their own… they need psychiatric help… any talks they need to attend have to be in Hospital Bahagia in Tanjung Rambutan.
