Calling on Subang Jaya residents who are interested in CNRM (One-Street Programme)

I had a chat with a councillor yesterday as he was interested in discussing our mission in pushing for CNRM by doing the education for it.  He agreed that education is sorely needed and that is the first step towards getting more people interested to participate in CNRM.

He told me that the local councils do not want to capture and kill at the pounds “Do you think we like doing it? We don’t,” he said, but they have no choice because people complain and it is the duty of the councils to act on these complaints.

He said some people complain that cats scratch their cars or dogs pee outside their houses – these people want the council to catch and kill these animals.

Sigh…..these are people who think the earth belongs only to them OR they expect animals to use the public toilets.

So, it all boils down to the people who complain.

When the complaints stop, the killing will stop.

If only we could educate and change the complainants’ mindset.

It’s long process but we have to start the education.

We can’t go on killing and killing, can we?  It’s not solving the problem, anyway.

Education is the key.

CNRM
C = Care (feed)
N = Neuter (we pay)
R = Rehome or Return to colony
M = Manage (continue to feed)

That is what we have been promoting besides providing financial assistance in sponsoring spay-neuter and medical treatment.

Since I live in Subang Jaya, I would like to invite any SJ resident who is interested in doing CNRM on his/her street to write to me.  If you could get your neighbours interested in helping to trap or catch the strays living on your street, we’ll help you with the spay-neuter charges at our panel vets.

Let’s start with ONE street.
YOUR street.

Then, we’ll progress to the next street….hopefully, to the whole Residents Association.

If we can do this and use it as a case study or a role model, we can approach the local council and maybe….better things can happen for the animals?

It’s worth a try…..

Any SJ resident interested?  We’ll work with you….(but you must do some work too, ok?)

Here’s what you need to do

1.  Talk to your neighbours about CNRM, and get them to agree on it.  (If you prefer that I explain it to them, organise a gathering, and let me know.)
2.  Once your whole street is agreeble to the idea and nobody is going to complain to the council, get a few people who are willing to do the catching and/or trapping.  You can borrow the traps from your local council.
3.  We’ll provide the funds and the clinic for spay-neuter.
4.  We’re promoting RETURN TO COLONY, so we need the whole street to agree that the spayed-neutered animals (with ears notched) will be allowed to live on.  No one will call in to complain about them.  Let’s aim for 100% support from one street first.  If we can’t get 100%, then at least reduced complaints?  I believe if we explain to our neighbours that neutered cats won’t breed anymore, some may be tolerant.  Some, not all, but some is better than none!
5.  If you could REHOME the animals, that’s even better, of course.  But we may have to return to colony, to be realistic.  It isn’t so easy to rehome adult animals.

It’s easier to talk to a smaller group of people and get their consent.  Hence, start with your street.

What happens to the animals

a.  A spayed-neutered community animal will have its ear notched as an indication so that it will not be re-captured.  Notching = a small V-cut on its right ear.

b.  Pregnant animals will NOT be spayed.

Why we RETURN TO COLONY

i.  It’s not easy to rehome so many stray animals.

ii.  By returning to the colony, we preserve the eco-system by preventing the re-colonisation of unneutered strays.  Hence, we return the neutered animals to its original environment to let them live out their natural lives (without breeding).

Interested?  Please write to me at chankahyein@gmail.com

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Stray animals are being killed because people complain about them.  Stop the complainants, and the killing will stop.

We have to educate and appeal to the complainants to stop complaining.

Live and let live, please.

This earth belongs to the animals as well.

Have always wonder how do catch stray dogs and cats. The ones I have come across won't come close.b

Yes, I cannot agree more on this. Many believe that developers built the houses for them to stay, but forgot before building those houses, that land was probably lived by many other species including dogs. And then they want them dead just because of pee.

It's funny when many who watched Avatar think that the intruder (human) was so cruel and admire the courage of Na'vi people. But many didn't look in the mirror and realise we are doing the same thing here, on earth.

It is such good news for the stray animals in SJ. Wish 1 day it would start in Klang n hope the CRUEL killings would stop SOON.

Yes, all changes begins with our very own self FIRST. One step at a time, if there's a will, that's a way!!!

I used to be so scared of animals, but since a female dog gave birth in my garden, it changed my life forever! I adopted one of the pup and learned a great deal about dogs! Then, I adopted another one… and another one (can't adopt anymore, it's FULL HOUSE)!

I become more compassion towards animals and doing my share to care for them. I started to feed the stray kittens/cats in my neighborhood but I AM STILL VERY SCARED of them especially those that look "scary" to me!! (phobia indeed). I usually leave the food and walk away quickly as I'm so scared of them following or getting closer to me!! (their meows can be quite scary to me at times!!!)

May be some day, I will overcome my fear…but for now, I can only feed them… and hopefully I can find someone to help me to catch them, spay/neuter them and let them live on in the neighborhood again.

The planet Earth belongs to all creatures… we human being must learn to share with the animals as well.

  5. Hi everyone, Thanks for the support. I have now written to some friends and two RAs to see if they are keen to participate in CNRM for their street. We have pledged to provide the funds for neutering, but they would have to do the catching. Am waiting for their response.

Huh! Those complainants have not seen "educated human" peeing in public, furthermore daringly right in front of our eyes. We really feel like snipping "it" off.

  7. Hi Dr. Chan,

I am staying in SS19 subang and have actually rehome a couple of kitten that gave birth a couple of times. I called her Mother Cat. She was very fierce. After a almost a year of feeding her and her kittens (countless of them), finally I managed to capture her for spaying (I sent to Dr. Edmund -in Puchong for spaying) and now I have been feeding them for the past 3 years (one female cat – the offspring of mother cat – no one wanted to adopt them). I am interested in your program however my neighbours here dislike cats and those who like have the tidak apa attitude. My street only these 2 cats come to my house and loiter around because they know me. Some of the cats and kittens have been poisoined by thesecruel people. There are many more cats / kittens are that multiplying and I dont have the money to spay more plus it is very difficult to catch them since they are across the street. However I would like these cats to find homes.

  8. Hi Shamiela,

Unfortunately, we can't provide the "rehoming" part except to publicise on the blog and to recommended petfinder.my We also do not have a shelter.

But we'd be more than happy to help with the spay-neuter charges of the cats on your street.

Do your neighbours call up MPSJ to complain? If they don't, that's good enough. We're just aiming for a street where nobody calls up MPSJ to catch-and-kill.

Can you get all the cats on your street neutered? We'll help you with the payment, if you need. You can use Dr Edmund, but I need the original receipts. If you liaise with me, I can do the payment to Dr Edmund through internet banking, but you'll have to get me the original receipts please and photos of each cat.

Of, you could use our vets here in Subang Jaya.

Ok with you? Write to me at chankahyein@gmail.com and we can talk more.

    Thank you.
