Cow spent the whole of yesterday on his springy bed, clearly quite upset about having to wear the e-collar. With some difficulty, we managed to put his eyedrops as instructed by the vet – the eyedrops every 2 hours and the ointment at night, before we went to bed.
The main ingredient in Cow’s eyedrops and ointment is chloramphenicol. Caregivers must be aware of certain precautions when administering this medication: http://csu-cvmbs.colostate.edu/vth/Documents/pharmacy-chloramphenicol-ophthalmic.pdf
This morning, I found Cow without his e-collar. He had taken it off. And, seemed much happier. I also noticed he could open his right eye – almost by half. I hope this means the eye is getting better.
I could not get the e-collar back on him, though.
Don’t disturb me, I’m grooming myself.
I do hope it wasn’t the serai leaves that poked his eye…
You see, Oreo, our serai is getting mutilated too.
So it’s been an hour after breakfast now, and I still cannot get him to wear the e-collar.
We want to know which of you “birds” injured our big brother’s eye!
We are not going to take the blame for something we didn’t do!!

Hi Dr Chan, your Serai leaves still look better than Mama’s, which aren’t as luscious and green as yours. Our Serai have few leaves and are light green in colour-ngiao. But the smell when I chew the leaves a bit is so nice! Mama loves the smell too!
Love,
Oreo
Hi Oreo and Kah Yein,
My mom says serai needs cutting back in order for it to grow nicely bushy. If you just let it grow and grow by itself, it will become straggly and the older leaves will turn yellow then brown. And the plant will look “unpretty.” Cut back until at the bottom near the soil and new nice leaves will grow.
Don’t forget to fertilise. Easiest is to put very diluted pee into the watering can during watering. So nope, Oreo, you cannot pee directly onto the plant. It will surely die this way.
Geez, I didn’t know the leaves had to be cut. Thanks for the tip! Human pee or cat pee?
Hi Auntie Chen Chen,
I’m going to tell Mama to cut the serai-ngiao! Thank you for the tip! Mama would be horrified if I peed directly onto the plant… but I don’t want to either. It’s not fun to have leaves poking at my bum whilst I pee. Mama fertilises with used coffee grounds after Papa is done with them-ngiao.
Which pee is more plenty and easy to collect? LOL.
