Why do cats drink running water?

Ask Indy.

So, why do some cats insist on drinking running water, like you, Indy?

Indy: The simple answer is, “We’re smart”. That’s about it.

Well, I read from a book that cats know that running water has less chances of being contaminated as compared with stagnant water, ie. water in a bowl. Is this true, Indy?

Indy: Ya think? We’re just so much smarter, is all.

And we are re-publishing this below for the benefit of cat owners, it’s from Catification, p. 239:

Did you know that it’s better to place your cat’s water bowl far away from their food bowl? In nature, cats instinctively do not drink water that is near a food source because there is a chance that the water could be contaminated. This is also why some cats prefer to drink moving water, like from a fountain or from the faucet. Moving water is less likely to be contaminated than stagnant water. Try adding a water fountain, or at least move your cat’s water dish to another area that’s away from her food bowl. You might find that she drinks more water!

Indy: You see? I told you, didn’t I? And you humans drink bottled water? Heh…

Indy always drinks running tap water and sometimes, after a heavy rainfall, he drinks rain water droplets on the clothes line. I am not sure if rain water is clean, though. But then again, I suppose cats should know better, don’t they?

  1. Hello,

I have created the ideal cat drinking fountain for cats who like to drink from faucets. I call it the AquaPurr. See http://www.AquaPurr.net for details.

The cat stands on a platform that triggers the flow of water through a spigot. The AquaPurr attaches to a faucet in place of the aerator. The faucet attachment includes a quick disconnect to allow regular use of the faucet.

It requires no electricity, is never empty, and never needs cleaning.

Thanks so much and let me know what you think!

    Steven
