Ginger starts on subcut and steroids

Ginger’s inappetence did not improve. I could barely get him to eat much. So I consulted the vet yesterday for the next step. The vet had earlier said the next step would be to administer steroids to try and suppress the progression of the FIV.

Based on Ginger’s blood test results, his problem is that the FIV is progressing. Otherwise, everything else looked well enough.

Initially the vet suggested that Ginger be hospitalised on drip. But I feared the hospitalisation in a new environment would stress him out. So I asked if I could do the subcut at home and administer the steroids. The vet agreed.

So Ginger was given 2 days of steroid injection (predisone) followed by 6 days of oral steroids (half tablet). I have also started him on daily 150ml subcut.

Yesterday, after the subcut and steroids, Ginger took a long afternoon nap and by nightfall, he started showing some interest in food. I know this is the effect of the steroids, but given his inappetence which was becoming worse, I think we need to address the inappetence first. The vet said it he still doesn’t eat, the next step would be to ultrasound his stomach.

He is eating a bit better now. So we shall take it one day at a time. Hopefully, we do not have to go on the steroids for the long term.

He definitely looks more alert now.

One day at a time.
