Ginger did not come for breakfast this morning. He had gone up to the highest platform (the lookout) and was sitting alone.
Something was definitely not right.
After feeding everyone, we managed to get him to come down but he was clearly limping.
There was a small black spot (it felt like a scab) on top of his right paw. We did not see anything else. Ginger could still walk, but he limped.
The right paw looked swollen.
He had all the moral support from the Monsters.
There was only this black spot and it felt like a scab.
We took him to the vet’s as soon as the clinic opened. Luckily there was a slot for us.
The vet shaved the area and indeed, that black spot is only a scab and was already healing. However, it was under the paw that had another wound which we didn’t know about. This wound was swollen. The vet says the wound was already there for a few days, but it probably only started giving pain today since Ginger wasn’t limping at all before today.
This wound underneath the paw was shaven and cleaned with Chlorhexidine, followed by Fucidin antibiotic cream.
Ginger’s temperature was taken and he had no fever. Everything else appeared to be normal for him too. The vet prescribed Clavumox (antibiotics) for 8 days, Meloxicam (anti-inflammatory) liquid for 4 days and transdermal Tramadol (2.5ml) twice a day for pain. The underpaw wound is to be cleaned twice a day with Chlorhexidine followed by Fucidin.
Follow-up check-up is in one week’s time as the vet needs to see the progress and whether any X-Ray is needed in case of any internal injury. Hopefully, not.
Ginger and Tabs are also due for their CKD check-up so we have planned to get that done together next week, at the same time.
Back home, this is the underpaw wound, but nothing much can be seen since it’s been cleaned and it’s all wet.
Back home to the hero’s welcome by the Monsters. The vet recommended that Ginger be put on the e-collar to prevent him from licking the wound. But I have not seen him licking the wound too.
Rest and get well soon, Ginger.
